Poetry Book Coming in 2020
I am so excited to announce that my first poetry book “Origami Stars and Hot Air Moon” will be published next year by Winter Goose Publishing.
The picture that is the featured image for this post is the one I printed at the beginning of this year with the title. I placed it on my wall where I would see it every day. My intent was to put together a poetry book and have it ready to submit by the end of the year. It’s funny that I knew the title before I began putting together the manuscript, but it helped guide me as I pieced the poems together, many of which I had been saving to submit to literary magazines.
The book came together faster than I imagined and I took the manuscript to the Wyoming Writers, Inc. conference this summer. The great thing about this writing conference is that they bring in literary agents and publishers. You can sign up to pitch your work and chat with them for about 15 minutes. I pitched my book and left my manuscript with the founder and publisher of Winter Goose Publishing Jessica Kristie. She is so incredibly kind that I completely forgot that I was terrified to pitch my poetry book.
I look forward to sharing more about the process with you in the future, including the cover reveal.
Getting everything together and submitted to the publisher along with several other poetry projects has consumed my time lately. I have all these posts that have been stacking up that I want to write. Hopefully, I’ll get to them soon.
What have you been working on lately? And what do you hope to finish before the end of the year?
Whoop whoop! Congrats Mandie! I love the title of the book as well.
π Thank you!!
You’re welcome!
Mandie,
Congratulations on your first book! They are always special. Mine came out 31 years ago π By the way, if you have the time, stop by JAX in Cheyenne on Dec. 15 to meet a variety of authors who will be there. You can check out my Biostration Facebook page to find all the details.
Cheers
Thank you! And yes, I know about the local author day at Jax. It looks like a great line up of authors attending. It’s great that it will be in Cheyenne this year! But make sure you show up on the 14th or you’ll miss it. π
That is so awesome! Congratulations!
“She is so incredibly kind that I completely forgot that I was terrified to pitch my poetry book.” I think that’s the best kind of publisher/author interaction. It’s the kind that all authors dream of having. Good for you! π
As for myself, I did NaNoWriMo this past month. I was aiming for 30,000 words just so I could beat my record from last year. I made it up to 20,000, which was my secondary goal. So, I still consider it a victory. I’m continuing to work on that story along with working on my Ambrose and Elsie story.
I’m hoping to get back to my third group of Ambrose and Elsie characters before the end of the year. π The poor things have been sitting in limbo while I finish a certain important plot point with Hildreth and Elsie.
Thank you! And of course you picked the most awkward sentence in the post to quote. Haha I chose to put that she “is” kind because I’ve spoken with her through email since then and her kindness continues, but for the context of the sentence I should have put “was.” And these are the things writers obsess about.
That’s awesome about writing 20,000 words for NaNoWriMo! I achieved the 50,000 words one year, and I’m not sure if I ever intend to put myself through that again. I think it’s a great jumpstart to a story and I think the pace is achievable on a normal basis. November is a bit of a challenge for me though because of the Thanksgiving holiday where I spend a lot of time with my family.
I think any attempt to write a certain amount of words for NaNoWriMo is a huge success though. I’ve also had a year where I crashed and burned trying to write 50,000 words and I don’t think I even hit 2,000 words that time.
I’ve had this itching to start a new story, but I’m currently trying to finish editing my horror novel. I know a new story can take over and could prevent me from returning to my editing, so I’m trying to stay focused. I’m making good progress too.
Have fun with your Ambrose and Elsie story!
Hahaha! If it’s any consolation, my Internal Editor bypassed that whole “is should have been was” detail. Of course, if I had written it, he would have been waving red flags in my face about it. He’s a very aggressive Internal Editor. π
I’m very happy with the progress I made on my NaNo story. I’m already 45 (short) chapters into it. This story is one I’ve been wanting to write for the past couple of years, but I kept putting it off. It’s Raven’s backstory all fleshed out, starting from when he and May Rose Farlington were seven years old.
It’s been a total blast to finally write it, although I do catch myself trying to slip in more modern terms like “for the record”. I don’t know if they used that phrase back then, but it feels too modern for my Internal Editor’s liking. I tried to convince my IE that it could also mean “for the paper record”, like for a chart or a newspaper or something like that. He was not amused or convinced.
Good luck with your editing! π
Yes, the internal editor can be quite cantankerous, but on occasion, I tell mine, “I do what I want.” She is not impressed.
I understand the struggle with word choice and phrases when writing for a different time period. Those can get tricky. Best of luck!
Hahaha! It takes a lot to impress an Internal Editor. π
I also tried to have my one character say something about going off someone’s radar. My Internal Editor pitched a drama fit about that one.
